Antique hand-made folk art wooden box with inlaid patterned lid and painting of a barn scene on the interior of the lid. It's a unique and interesting hand-made piece that was purchased for me around 1989 in central New York (Lodi I think). The story told to me then was that it was made by an old farmer in the area in the late 1800's. I have no way of knowing whether that's true, but seems likely enough. The inlay on the lid is glued on and has at times fallen off in parts because the grain is crossed with the grain of the wood underneath. This is a typical beginner wood-working mistake, which is why I concluded this is a folk art piece. As a result of this, there is one spot to right of center where a piece of the wood looks like it was inexpertly replaced and isn't original. That could be improved. I'm fairly sure the barn scene is a pasted-on scene on paper than was then painted over. See the photos for details. The key and lock work, despite apparently having been forced open at some point in the past, as evidenced by the pry marks near the lock. It's unclear if it's the original lock or not or if whoever was trying to force it open succeeded. As visible in the photos, it has cracks and clear signs of aging, as would be expected in such an item. It obviously has some stories to tell, and is a lovely piece that I have enjoyed having, but I am down-sizing and hoping to find it a new home now.
